About

Doug Herr

Doug Herr is a resident of Mill Valley, California, and has been painting since childhood. Having grown up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, some of his early memories are of drawing trees and country scenes. He pursued art through his school years and was inspired by the painters of the Hudson River School. He received a BFA from Kent State University in Ohio in 1968 and moved to California shortly thereafter.

In the 1970’s Doug produced a series of abstract paintings which reflected the mood of the era. Some of these works received awards in Sausalito and San Francisco Art Festivals, and were exhibited in many galleries, including Rose-Bernardi Gallery in Sausalito and Larkin in San Francisco.  Works were also exhibited at J Doyle Gallery in Chicago, Spectrum in New York, Zabrinsky in Vancouver, Canada, and Charlotte Mint Museum in North Carolina.

He spent most the 1980’s in construction and home remodel, followed by work in advertising for DDB Needham and Hal Riney & Partners during the 1990’s.  In the late 90’s he decided to pursue painting full time. His current body of work, Mount Tam Suite, is a group of portraits of Marin County’s Mt. Tamalpais and its environs.

“I have been fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful locations in the U.S.,” says Doug. “In several decades I have seen the mountain in so many moods — from the most subtle to the most sublime. With onsite drawing and using elements gathered through years of photography, many of my works are pictorially accurate. Others have been embellished by memory and imagination.“
